How to set up a current song ticker for Spotify in OBS

Sun, 03/16/2014 - 18:40 -- admin

Today I'm going to walk you through how to set up a current song ticker for your stream, using a free program called Snip, Spotify, and the wonderful Open Broadcast Software.

Inital steps

  1. Download Snip
  2. Unzip the .rar file into a directory where you can find it -- I unzipped mine into Program Files/Snip
  3. Navigate to wherever you unzipped the file, and run Snip.exe

Adding current song to OBS stream

  1. Open OBS
  2. Create a new Scene (right click within white Scenes box, choose Add Scene), or left click on an existing scene
  3. Right click within the white Sources box, and choose Add -> Text
  4. Enter a name for this Source
  5. Select Use Text From File (UTF-* or compatible), then click the Browse button
  6. Find your Snip folder, and choose the .txt file called Snip.txt
  7. You can customize the font, color, scroll speed, opacity, etc. as well on this screen
  8. Click OK

Final steps

  1. Make sure you have Snip.exe running, then open Spotify and play a song
  2. Preview your stream, and you should see your current song ticker!
  3. Make sure it's one of the top most layers, so that it's visible.  I use a semi-transparent border in my stream overlay, and position the song ticker on top of that:
